1. Why choose the 5-day circular route instead of the standard 2-day trek?

The standard 2-day trek goes directly up and down the main valley. This 5-day circuit explores the Azzaden Valley, which offers:

  • Better Acclimatization: You spend more time at altitude before the summit push, increasing your chances of success.

  • Cultural Immersion: You stay in remote villages (Tiziane, D’knt) that standard tourists rarely see.

  • Scenery: You experience diverse landscapes, from red rock canyons to lush walnut groves.

2. How difficult is the summit day?

Summit day is strenuous. You will start hiking at 5:00 AM in the dark. The climb involves about 960m of vertical gain over rocky scree. However, because you have spent the previous 4 days hiking and acclimatizing, your body will be much better prepared than on shorter trips.

3. What is the accommodation like?

  • Days 1 & 2: You will stay in Berber Guesthouses. These are basic but comfortable traditional homes with shared facilities, offering a genuine look at local life.

  • Day 3: You will stay in a tent or refuge at Azib Tamsoult.

  • Day 4: You will stay at the Toubkal Refuge, a large mountain hut with dormitory-style sleeping.

4. Is luggage transport included?

No. According to the package details provided, mules and muleteers to carry your luggage are NOT included in the base price.

  • Note: You must either carry your own gear or arrange/pay for mule support separately. Please check with the operator for the cost of hiring a muleteer if you do not wish to carry your full backpack.

5. What food is provided?

All meals are included during the trek. A Berber cook accompanies the group to prepare breakfast, lunch (often picnics in scenic spots), and hot dinners at the guesthouses/refuges.

6. What extra costs should I plan for?

  • Travel Insurance: Mandatory for trekking at high altitude.

  • Drinks: Bottled water, soft drinks, and alcohol are not included. You can buy water at villages and refuges.

  • Luggage Support: Hiring a mule if you don’t want to carry your bag.

  • Tips: Gratuities for the guide and cook.

7. Do I need technical climbing gear?

In summer (late spring to early autumn), Mount Toubkal is a non-technical trek; you do not need ropes or crampons. Good hiking boots and trekking poles are highly recommended. If trekking in winter, ice axes and crampons are required.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech –Imi Oughlad –Tizi N’Tachte –Tiziane

Your day starts with an 8:30 a.m. pickup in Marrakech. You’ll drive through the Tahaoute and Moulay Brahim gorges to Imi Oughlad (1450m) where you’ll meet your local guide and muleteer team. The group will then embark on a 3-hour acclimatization hike through cornfields and juniper forests to the Tizi N’Tachete pass. Here, you’ll get great views of the Imlil and Azzaden valleys. After a picnic lunch, you will hike for about half an hour to the village of Tiziane (1750m) for the night.

Day 2: Tizziane – Tizi N’Taghrhourte – D’knt

Leaving the village of Tiziane, we’ll head south through terraces of large walnut trees. A steady climb brings us to the Tizi Taghrghourt pass, offering great views of the Azzaden Valley. The landscape here is drier, showcasing vibrant reds, yellows, and grays in the rocks. We’ll then descend into the D’kent Valley and walk past the unique village of Tizgi, which features old watermills and beautiful architecture. We will spend the night in a traditional Berber guesthouse owned by a local family. The day’s walk is about 6 hours.

Day 3: D’knt – Tizi n’tagdalte – Azib Tamsoult

We begin the day with a climb to the high pass of Tizi N’tougdalt at 2700m. The trek starts in the valley’s terraced fields before ascending the arid mountainside. After the pass, we will descend through a juniper forest. Lunch will be a relaxing break under ancient walnut trees along the river in the beautiful Azzaden Valley. Following lunch, we will hike through the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) and then up to the summer village of Tamsoult, where we will spend the night in a tent or a refuge.

Day 4: ÂAZIB TAMSOULT -TIZI AGUELZIM – TOUBKAL REFUGE

We begin the day with a significant climb out of the Azzaden Valley, following mule tracks up to Tizi N’Aguelzim (3650m). After reaching the pass, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch with breathtaking views of the High Atlas Mountains. We then continue southwest, descending to the Toubkal Refuge (3207m), our home for the night. The total trekking time is about 6 hours.

Day 5: TOUBKAL REFUGE – SUMMIT JBEL TOUBKAL- SIDI CHAMHAROUCH – IMLIL – MARRAKECH

Today is the day we conquer Mount Toubkal. We’ll start early with a 4:30 a.m. breakfast to begin our climb by 5:00 a.m., which helps us beat the heat and reach the summit at the perfect time. As we ascend, we’ll take brief stops to refuel with water, oranges, and Moroccan nuts. In about 3-4 hours, you’ll be standing on the summit, taking in the incredible panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains and other peaks over 4000m. From this high vantage point, you can even see all the way to the Sahara. After a time for admiration and reflection, we’ll descend the same path back to the refuge for lunch. We then continue our journey back down to Imlil, where your transfer awaits.
