Overview

Trek into the dramatic and remote Jebel Saghro massif — a volcanic, moon-like landscape that lies between Morocco’s High Atlas and the edge of the Sahara. This trekking experience blends stark rocky ridges, deep gorges, and nomadic Berber hospitality, offering a unique, off-the-beaten-path journey. Saghro is home to the Aït Atta people, known for their transhumant lifestyle, moving with their goats, camels, and traditional tents. The terrain is wild and rugged — perfect for trekkers seeking solitude, dramatic views, and cultural immersion.
In this guide, we’ll cover a 6-day trek, typical itinerary, what to expect, and all the practical details you’ll need.
Why Trek Jebel Saghro?
Incredible volcanic formations and lunar-like ridges. Iconic rock landmark: Bab n’Ali (“Gates of Ali”) — two giant rock pillars rising dramatically. Remote Berber villages and nomadic camps of the Aït Atta. Wild camping under starlit desert skies or in local tents.

Excellent for photography — rugged terrain, contrast of black rock and desert light. Take your Backpack Less crowded than the High Atlas — more solitude, more authenticity.

Tour Plan

Day 1— Marrakech → Dades Valley → Tagdilt (1,650m)

Driving Time: 6–7 hours Meals: Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Berber Guesthouse in Tagdilt Your adventure begins early in the morning when you leave Marrakech and cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m). The landscape changes dramatically from green valleys to ancient kasbahs and desert foothills. You continue toward the legendary Dades Valley, passing palm groves, mud-brick kasbahs, and small villages. After lunch in the valley, the road takes you deeper into the pre-Saharan region until reaching Tagdilt village, the gateway to Jebel Saghro. Here, you will meet your trekking crew — guide, cook, and muleteers — and enjoy a warm welcome in a local Berber home. Highlights: Crossing High Atlas mountains Exploring Dades and Skoura palm valleys Meeting your trekking team First look at Saghro’s volcanic landscapes

Day 2— Tagdilt → Almou n’Ouarg Plateau (2,200m)

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours Elevation Gain: +550m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Wild Camping After breakfast, the trek officially begins. Mules are loaded and you gently ascend through rocky hills and barren landscapes typical of the Saghro region. You’ll pass small nomadic settlements and shepherd paths used by the Aït Atta tribe during their seasonal migrations. As you climb, the landscape opens into a vast volcanic plateau known as Almou n’Ouarg (approx. 2,200m) — an iconic high desert landscape filled with volcanic stones and panoramic viewpoints. Camp is set in a peaceful, isolated area with beautiful sunset views over the black-rock mountains. Highlights: First day of real trekking Nomadic trails of the Aït Atta people Expansive volcanic plateau Stunning sunset panorama

Day 3 — Almou n’Ouarg → Kouaouch Summit (2,592m) → Igli (1,700m)

Trekking Time: 6–7 hours Elevation: +400m / –900m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Wild Camping at Igli Today is one of the most rewarding days of the trek. After an early start, you begin climbing toward Jebel Kouaouch, the highest peak in the Saghro Massif (2,592m). The ascent is steady and offers magnificent views over the whole pre-Saharan desert. At the summit, you’ll enjoy 360° views of: The High Atlas mountains Dades Valley The deep volcanic ridges of Saghro Faraway desert plains After a break at the top, you descend through dramatic rocky slopes until reaching the lush spring area of Igli, surrounded by almond trees and small farmlands. Your camp is set near a water source — a beautiful contrast between desert terrain and green gardens. Highlights: Summit of Jebel Kouaouch (2,592m) Panoramic desert & mountain views Dramatic ridgeline descent Green oasis camp

Day 4 — Igli → Afourar Gorge → Bab n’Ali (1,500m)

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours Elevation Loss: –200m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Wild Camping near Bab n’Ali Today’s path leads into one of the most impressive parts of the entire trek: the Afourar Gorge. You follow a narrow valley with towering rock formations, natural springs, and peaceful shepherd paths. As you exit the gorge, the trail gradually opens into a wide plateau — and soon you reach the unforgettable sight of Bab n’Ali, the famous twin rock pillars that rise dramatically from the desert floor. This is the most iconic landmark in Jebel Saghro and a superb camping area with incredible night skies. Highlights: Trek through Afourar Gorge Seasonal water sources & lush pockets Arrival at Bab n’Ali (“Gates of Ali”) Beautiful desert campsite under the stars

Day 5— Bab n’Ali → Tifdassine Valley → Handour Village

Trekking Time: 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Guesthouse in Handour After enjoying sunrise at Bab n’Ali, you start walking toward the green agricultural valleys of Saghro. The trail crosses small Berber hamlets, almond groves, terraced fields, and palm-shaded gardens. You arrive at Handour, a charming oasis-like village surrounded by fields and water channels (khettaras). Here you stay in a comfortable local guesthouse — a great opportunity to enjoy Berber hospitality and a hot shower! Highlights: Sunrise at Bab n’Ali Passing through traditional farming villages Beautiful contrast from rock desert to green valley Comfortable night in a Berber lodge

Day 6— Handour → Nkob / Agdez → Marrakech

Driving Time: 6–7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Accommodation: Not included Your trekking adventure ends today. After breakfast, you meet your driver and start the journey back toward Marrakech. The route passes the palm-filled Draa Valley, ancient kasbahs, and small desert towns like Nkob and Agdez. You then cross the High Atlas once again to arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon or evening. Highlights: Scenic drive through Draa Valley Palm oases & desert villages Return to Marrakech

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q1: Is the Jebel Saghro trek safe? A1: Yes, when done with an experienced guide. The trails are rugged, and there are remote areas, so it’s safer to trek with a local team. Q2: Do I need to have previous trekking experience? A2: Not necessarily. While some fitness is needed, the trek doesn’t require technical climbing, just endurance and comfort with walking 5–6 hours a day. Q3: Will I walk through water like canyon trekking? A3: No — unlike river gorges such as Mgoun, Saghro’s terrain is more rocky and dry, though you may pass through narrow gorges and dry riverbeds. Q4: How cold does it get at night? A4: Nights can be cold, especially on exposed plateaus. Temperatures may drop significantly, so bring warm layers and a good sleeping bag. Q5: Can I join the trek alone or as a solo traveler? A5: Yes, many trekking companies accept solo travelers. Make sure to check group size, cost, and guide availability. Q6: How remote is this trek? A6: Very remote. You will spend several nights camping or in small Berber lodges, and there are long stretches without modern infrastructure. Q7: Is there cellular network / Wi-Fi during the trek? A7: In most trekking areas — especially on the plateau and in gorges — there is little to no cell coverage. Lodges may have Wi-Fi, but don’t count on reliable access. Q8: What wildlife can I see? A8: The area is mostly arid, but you may spot hardy desert-adapted species: small reptiles, birds of prey, and traditional livestock. atlashikingtours.com Q9: How do I reach the starting point of the trek? A9: Typically by 4×4 or minibus from Marrakech, via the High Atlas (Tizi n’Tichka) or via Ouarzazate, depending on the itinerary. magic-of-morocco.com Q10: Can the trek be customized? A10: Yes — most trekking companies (including Sahara Soul Tours) can tailor the trek for more or fewer days, or different levels of comfort (e.g., more nights in villages, fewer camping nights).
